How to Measure a Package Correctly

Determining Length (L), Width (W) and Height (H)

The longest side of your package is the length. Be sure to round up to the nearest centimeter when measuring.

Girth = Length + 2x Height + 2x Width

How do I calculate the girth and what additional costs apply?

Girth = longest side + 2x height + 2x width

Girth Longest Side Additional Costs incl. VAT
up to 330 cm Under 150cm None
up to 330 cm from 151 cm to max. 170 cm (do not exceed the girth!) 45,- Euro
from 331 cm to max. 400 cm 260,- Euro
from 401 cm 1.450,- Euro
Insufficiently packed (paper/foil only, box made of wood/plastic or metal, round shape) (do not exceed the girth!) from 45,- Euro up to 1.450,- Euro depending on size!

WARNING:

UPS drivers/collectors are not obliged to check the compliance of the package length or girth or inform you about additional costs!

How do I measure an irregularly shaped package?

Measure irregularly shaped packages as if they were in a rectangular box. Measure the length, width, and height of the theoretical package from the outermost points to determine the package dimensions.

In this example, the total girth is 444 cm:

  • Length = 202 cm
  • Width = 76 cm
  • Height = 45 cm

What is not conveyor-belt capable or compliant?

These packages are not conveyor-belt capable and may incur extremely high additional costs from UPS, as they must be scanned and manually sorted or transported by employees!

Here are some examples of how not to pack packages!

All of these packages are not conveyor-belt capable or exceed the allowable girth:
